Bio
"Reach Me, Come on speak to me... through the static in the sunset…"
David Blazye is a Nottingham-based singer-songwriter, guitarist, and trumpeter whose music is informed and inspired by alt-folk, jazz, bossa nova, soul, and ambient music.
A Journey of Solace in Sound
David Blazye’s music is a gently life-affirming reflection of his journey through various genres and influences. He believes in the power of music to create moments of quiet communion, whether through speakers, headphones, or live performance. His goal is to create soulful, introspective spaces where listeners can connect with themselves and others. Mixing a deep love for harmony, rootsy soul and melodic improvisation with evocative lyrics, he offers expressive, warm sounds for connection and reflection.
Evolving Sounds and Inspirations
Driven by a desire to discover, explore, and reshape his songs and sound, Blazye is in a place of reimagining, as he approaches his songs old and new with a focus on fingerstyle guitar and restrained, contemplative vocals. His music reflects this shift—the mellow tones of nylon strings, acoustic guitars, and percussive loops blending with ambient trumpet solos to create a reflective soundscape. Driven by a process of creative exploration, like many of us, he draws inspiration from a wide array of sources, including visual art, literature and film, as well as music.
Blazye admires artists like Kelly Joe Phelps, Joe Henry and Joni Mitchell, whose works inspire his blend of impressionistic lyricism and improvisational freedom. With new recordings in the works, he aims to capture and share this intimate atmosphere, inviting listeners to experience the hypnotic introspective space he creates through his music.
Jazz has become a notable influence for Blazye, clearly evident on his 2016 album Days That We Float where he primarily played trumpet. This album, his first self-produced set of jazz-influenced pieces, featured a line-up of Nottingham jazz musicians. The incorporation of jazz has brought an improvisational quality to his music, blending its harmonic and rhythmic depth with the reflective plaintive nature of folk. Studying jazz standards and solos by great musicians like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Chet Baker, and Thelonious Monk, as well as the bossa nova of Tom Jobim and Joao Gilberto, has significantly shaped his approach and allowed him to further develop his sound.
The All This Rain EP, recorded in 2010 and released digitally in 2023, showcases another facet of Blazye’s musical journey. Influenced by old electric blues, and artists like Howlin’ Wolf and Tom Waits, this EP reflects a period when Blazye explored a more robust, full-throated vocal style and electric guitar-driven sound.
Early Career Breakthrough
In his early 20s, Blazye had a significant career breakthrough when he met David Bates, a former Polydor A&R man. Bates signed Blazye to DB Records after hearing the demo of his song “I Go Low,” which he loved. This pivotal moment in Blazye’s musical journey provided early support that helped him gain confidence and momentum in his career, leading to further opportunities and growth as an artist.
Roots and Musical Evolution
Born in Greenwich, London, Blazye was deeply influenced by classic rock and soul legends like The Beatles, Otis Redding, and Marvin Gaye. As a teenager, discovering icons such as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Neil Young inspired him to pursue songwriting and live performance. His debut album, From The Playground (DB Records, 2002), released under the moniker The High and Lonesome, showcased a folk-rock sound with string arrangements by Amanda Kramer. This album featured contributions from bassist Charlie Jones (Goldfrapp) and drummer Clive Deamer (Portishead), marking the beginning of his exploration into various musical styles.
His second, self-titled album, David Blazye (Top Cat Music, 2007), produced by Tim Oliver, took a more stripped-back approach. Along with Charlie Jones and Clive Deamer, this album featured members of his live band, The Reservations (Leanne Narewski and Simon Bowhill). Nigel Gould of the Belfast Telegraph praised the album, stating, “Blazye is the ultimate songwriters’ songwriter.” This album highlighted Blazye’s ability to create raw and exposed songs using acoustic guitar, glockenspiel, piano, and his warm, understated vocals.
The Ongoing Journey
As a father and artist, Blazye draws inspiration from family life and his creative pursuits. He is currently working independently, exploring the boundaries of his sound and bringing a fresh perspective to the singer-songwriter tradition. From his early influences to his current projects, he remains committed to creating music that is personal and relatable. For fans of thoughtfully crafted, genre-blending music, Blazye’s work offers a profound and continually evolving experience.
